Performance-Enhancement of Platform-Based, HF Direction-Finding Systems Using Dynamic Mode Selection

We present a method to enhance the accuracy of platform-based, high-frequency (HF) direction-finding (DF) systems using dynamic mode selection. To improve bandwidth and efficiency, metallic platform supporting DF array is used as primary radiator by employing electrically small antennas excite linearly independent combinations its characteristic modes (CMs). However, radiation characteristics these vary dramatically over HF band, making it difficult achieve consistently good with fixed system. alleviate this, we propose selection strategy enhanced accuracy. This based on assumption that number available CMs greater than coherent receive channels. Thus, allows for choosing optimal antenna combination obtain best at each frequency. demonstrated an airborne system five up four demonstrate efficacy proposed approach computer simulations scaled-model experiments.
